Performance has always been part of Subaru’s DNA. Today, the lineup includes the dynamic WRX and the agile BRZ. While some still miss the legendary WRX STI—which bowed out in 2021—the automotive world is evolving, and Subaru is evolving with it.
That said, there’s exciting news on the horizon. Earlier this June, Subaru released a teaser image and a statement that’s reignited hope among performance enthusiasts: a brand-new sports model is coming this fall.
The announcement came directly from Tetsuro Fujinuki, Subaru’s General Manager and Chief Technical Officer. He confirmed that Subaru will debut a performance vehicle at the Japan Mobility Show, scheduled for later this year—specifically in the fall.
Based on the teaser image, there are strong hints that the upcoming model will be closely tied to the current WRX. The signature C-shaped LED headlights, aggressive front fascia, and the unmistakable hood scoop all suggest a WRX-inspired design. That said, there are key differences: a more assertive front diffuser, widened fenders, and a rear end that remains somewhat concealed in the shadows.
One standout detail? A noticeably extended roofline, combined with visible hinge placements, has sparked speculation. Could this be a sign that a hatchback is making a comeback—or is Subaru preparing to introduce a brand-new member of its performance family?
Fujinuki noted that the new vehicle will “make good use of our current technological strengths. We’re aiming to create something more forward-thinking.”
Naturally, many fans are hoping this means the return of an STI-grade model, possibly reimagined with fresh styling and enhanced performance. Of course, we’ll have to wait a little longer to know for sure. Subaru is keeping its cards close for now, with all to be revealed in just a few months’ time.
What is certain is that change is brewing in Subaru’s performance lineup—and that alone is exciting news.
