Subaru Outback Wilderness 2026: Continuing a New Tradition

A completely redesigned Subaru Outback is on the way for 2026—and yes, the ever-popular Wilderness edition is back. First introduced with the previous generation, the Wilderness trim quickly became a fan favourite, solidifying its place as a new tradition in the Outback lineup.

Unveiled at the 2025 New York International Auto Show this past April, the 2026 Outback Wilderness is engineered to push off-road boundaries even further. With more power, a bolder design, and enhanced technology, it builds on the rugged spirit that defines the Wilderness approach—while delivering even greater capability and confidence.

Engineered for Adventure

At the heart of the new Outback Wilderness is Subaru’s 2.4-litre turbocharged Boxer 4-cylinder engine, producing 260 horsepower and a robust 277 lb-ft of torque. Power is delivered to all four wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with a manual mode that mimics eight gear ratios, accessible through steering-wheel paddle shifters.

The dual-mode X-Mode system (Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud) returns, offering excellent traction across various surfaces. And for 2026, Subaru has refined its signature full-time symmetrical all-wheel drive system, which now features quicker central differential locking and improved grip on uneven terrain. It also integrates steering angle data for added cornering stability—making this the most capable Outback yet.

Upgraded Off-Road Performance

With a ground clearance of 241 mm, the new Outback Wilderness surpasses many larger SUVs when it comes to tackling rugged environments. The all-new adaptive electronic suspension enhances both ride comfort on pavement and stability on rougher roads. Sensors constantly monitor road conditions in real time to optimize suspension settings on the fly.

The approach, breakover, and departure angles have also been improved to 20.0°, 21.2°, and 22.5°, respectively—helping the Wilderness clear obstacles with greater ease. Rugged 17-inch wheels are wrapped in Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tires, further boosting off-road confidence.

Towing Capability

The 2026 Outback Wilderness can tow up to 3,500 lbs, and a newly designed trailer hitch with both four- and seven-pin connectors makes it easier than ever to hook up trailers or recreational gear.

Rugged and Refined Design

The Outback Wilderness stands out with an even more assertive look for 2026. New styling elements include a redesigned front bumper, widened fender flares, distinctive hexagonal LED headlights, reinforced roof tie-down hooks, and signature anodized copper exterior accents. The roof rails can now support up to 363 kg, making them ideal for mounting a rooftop tent or carrying oversized gear.

Inside, the cabin features water-resistant, animal-free upholstery that’s easy to clean after a muddy adventure. Copper accent stitching adds a distinctive touch, exclusive to the Wilderness trim. A large 12.1-inch touchscreen anchors the centre console, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless connectivity. A new 360-degree camera system ensures full visibility when navigating challenging off-road terrain.

Cargo capacity also sees a bump, now offering 980 litres of space behind the second row—plenty of room for gear, groceries, or camping essentials.

Final Thoughts

The 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness raises the bar on every front. It builds meaningfully on the outgoing model, which already made waves as the first of its kind. With greater off-road prowess, refined design, and smart tech, it’s ready for whatever adventure you have in store.
